Marine magnetics

For measurements of the Earth's magnetic field at the sea surface, at BGR a towed gradient magnetometer is used which is based on a refined principle of the proton precession magnetometer (Overhauser magnetometer). By this magnetometer the disturbing temporal variations of the Earth's magnetic field can be suppressed. In addition, the BGR owns magnetometer probes for measuring the vector components of the magnetic field. These can be towed and can also be installed on the research vessel.

Of both magnetometer types there are also versions for use in deep water available at BGR. These can be mounted on various platforms used in deep water close to the seabed and mainly serve small-scale investigations of mineral deposits on the seabed.
