CO2GeoNet was a European network of excellence, that was created within the 6th EC framework programme in 2004. In April 2009 this network was transformed into a non-profit association under French law.

The CO2GeoNet Association addresses all questions related to the geological storage of CO2. The Association members aim to harmonise their R&D activities and to participate jointly, in differing constellations, in collaborative research projects. The Association’s activities also include capacity building, provision of objective and independent information to the public and advising European committees and bodies.

The Association cooperates world-wide with leading nations, networks and institutions with respect to the geological storage of CO2 such as IEAGHG, CSLF, or ISO. It organises technical/scientific workshops and an annual stakeholder conference (CO2GeoNet Open Forum in Venice).

BGR predominantly takes part in the following joint activities:

  • research and development i) of methods for detection and quantification of CO2 emanantions in soils and water bodies and ii) on impacts of naturally occurring CO2 emanations on rocks and microorganisms.
  • capacity building, e.g. in cooperation with IEAGHG and EAGE;
  • providing information to the general public and contributing to reports addressed to stakeholders.
