Rocks, minerals and fossils document the structure of the earth and the processes of change as well as the development of life with its great variety. Geoscientific collections give access to indispensable rudiments and evidence for the geological sciences, the economy and also for teachings and education.
The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources keeps a collection in Berlin and, in cooperation with the State Authority for Mining, Energy and Geology, in Hanover. The collection can be used by scientists on site or through a national and international loan system. Databases simplify access to the collection.
Additional to the geoscientific collection there are three storage facilities in Hanover, Grubenhagen and Berlin, where about 70 000 m of cores and untreated core samples are stored.
